How Merla works
The record
Weight, vaccinations, medications, diagnoses, allergies, symptoms and vet visits with findings and costs, all in one place. The vaccination traffic light shows at a glance what is still valid, and every entry lands in the history automatically. Photos get 250 MB of storage on the free plan and 5 GB on the Private plan.
Character, heat and offspring
Beyond the health data you record what your pet is really like: energy, grooming and care effort as an assessment, plus behavior and preferences as free text. For female animals there are also heat, pregnancy and litters. Everything is optional and stays invisible until you enter something.
Due dates and calendar
You see your pets every day, so no push notifications are needed. When you open the app, it shows what is due today: medications on their own schedule, expiring vaccination cover and due preventive care such as deworming or tick protection. You confirm every dose with a tap, logged with the time. The calendar shows everything in a monthly view, and missed days can be logged there. Days and due dates follow your time zone, automatically from your device or fixed in the settings.
Sharing the pet pass
A link or QR code for the practice, pet sitter or boarding kennel, with no app and no account on the other side. Per link you choose which sections are visible, set a validity and revoke at any time. For care stays you add instructions to the link, such as feeding times and an emergency number; they appear right at the top of the shared pass. There are also printable cards in credit card size and a poster.
Food and preventive care
You record what your pet eats with brand, amount and period, including a link for reordering. With intolerances, the history shows immediately when food was switched. Plus care plans for deworming, tick protection or the yearly check, due on their own schedule.
Family and spaces
Pets live in spaces, for example your household or your parents'. Per space you invite people and assign roles for reading, editing or managing; two more people can join you at the same time (so there are three of you), and removing a member frees the spot again. This way the whole family maintains the same record instead of sending photos around.
For foster homes
Next to your home you create a second space of the foster home type: own pets and foster pets neatly separated, switched with one tap, and your subscription covers all your spaces, so you pay once. When a foster pet moves in with its new family, the complete record travels along via the transfer link. On request you also enable your own public adoption page: pets with the status adoptable or reserved appear there without health data, and you simply share its address, for example in your Instagram bio.
For shelters and rescues
Organizations get their own workspace with animals, rounds and adoption. New arrivals can be marked as quarantine or isolation, with end date and requirements; occupancy per species is shown in the cockpit. The register German law requires (§ 11 TierSchG) shows intakes and departures for any period, printable and as a table. Inquiries about an animal are tracked in the adopter file, and what the next shift needs to know sits as a note on the animal and at the top of the morning rounds. On adoption, the health record moves to the new family, while the departure with whereabouts stays in the shelter's register.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns my data?
You. We do not sell data and do not analyze it for advertising. You can export all spaces, pets and entries of your keeper world as a file at any time, photos per pet as a ZIP, and delete your account with all its contents.
What happens if I cancel?
Your records are kept, readable and exportable. One pet of your choice stays fully editable, the other records become read-only. For shelters and rescues: after cancelling, everything can still be read and exported, but nothing can be edited any more. Nothing is deleted unless you do it yourself.
Do I get reminders on my phone?
No, deliberately not. You see your pets every day and know what they need. Instead of push notifications, the app shows you what is due when you open it: due medications and expiring vaccination cover.
Does my vet practice see my whole record?
Only what you release. With the pet pass you choose per link which sections are visible, set a validity and can revoke it at any time.
I run a foster home. Do I need two accounts?
No. Next to your home you create a second space of the foster home type and switch with one tap. You pay once: your subscription is tied to your account and covers all your spaces.
Do I need an app from the store?
No. Merla runs in the browser and can be added to your phone's home screen like an app.
Does it work for several pets and for shelters?
Yes. On the Private plan you add as many pets as you like. Shelters and rescues get their own workspace with animals, rounds and adoption.
